Con questa formula vincente la Polo Gold Cup ha guadagnato un posto nell'elitè internazionale dei tornei di questa antica disciplina sportiva (prime testimonianze duemila anni orsono in Asia) e che, dominio britannico dall'inizio del diciannovesimo secolo, si gioca ormai in oltre settanta paesi del mondo.
La Polo Gold Cup Jaeger-LeCoultre 2008 è un vero e proprio "circuito" di tornei. Primo appuntamento nel cuore delle Dolomiti, a fine febbraio con la Cortina Winter Polo on Snow - AUDI Gold Cup: si è giocato come sempre sul lago ghiacciato di Misurina a quota 1800 metri in una cornice che non ha eguali in tutto il pianeta. Dopo una settimana di match assistiti da condizioni meteo fantastiche, per lo scontro finale si sono ritrovate sul terreno innevato di gioco i polo team di AUDI (capitano Rommy Gianni) ed il polo team Jaeger-LeCoultre (capitano Tom Barrack). Quest'ultimo è riuscito a spuntarla sull'avversario negli ultimi dieci secondi di gioco per solo mezzo punto di differenza.
Per il prossimo appuntamento il palcoscenico della Polo Gold Cup è spostato in Sardegna, nell'entroterra di Porto Cervo (località Bucchi Toltu), dove dal 23 aprile al 3 maggio, in uno dei momenti in cui l'isola offre il meglio di sé quanto a clima e vivibilità, è in programma la seconda tappa del circuito: la Costa Smeralda Spring Polo Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup.
Il polo ha debuttato in Sardegna solo nel 2006 ma il successo organizzativo è stato immediato. L'eco del torneo ha fatto rapidamente il giro del mondo ed i migliori polo teams fanno ora a gara per prenotare la loro iscrizione ai tornei isolani. Following the extraordinary success of Cortina Winter Polo on Snow, the Polo Gold Cup 2008, is ready to land in Porto Cervo for the second venue which will take place at the end of April.
The Costa Smeralda Spring Polo Jaeger Le Coultre Gold Cup 2008 will be staged from 23rd April to 3rd May on the pitch of Bucchi Toltu, a deep green playingfield set between the granite rock faces surrounding Porto Cervo. The GoldCup will be played by six teams in a highly spectacular challenge with flavours of daring action and sport seasoned with - as it usually happens in all polo tournaments - touches of elegance, fashion, and glamour. Over a hundred and sixty horses will sail across the Tirrenean Sea to become the leading characters of this tournament which started last year with anextremely successful debut.
This is only the third year that Sardinia is playing host to the event, but the Porto Cervo Gold Cup is now considered amongst the most prestigious international meetings and has been entered in the Gotha of the great international events.
Actually, it is rather hard to resist the charm of Sardinia and of its Emerald Coast. Last year, guests from many Countries accepted the invitation of the Organising Committee, attracted as they were by the welcoming hospitality and the excellent organisation. The tournament has become famous all over the world and now the most experienced teams from Europe and the United States are on the "waiting list" to be able to enter the next tournaments. There are two polo tournaments in Sardinia in 2008. The second event will be staged in July from 6th to 13th.
Maurizio Zuliani, President of the Organising Committee, said the polo tournament in Sardinia was an incredible experience. The logistic support of the Cala di Volpe and Cervo hotels and of Consorzio Costa Smeralda was the key to guarantee the success of the event but also the ancestral passion of the Sardinian people for horses was fundamental to attract hundreds of spectators who crowded the enthusiastic followers: all of them passionate about polo.
U.S. tycoon Tom Barrack is also a great supporter and promoter of this ancient sport in Sardinia - records in Asia date back over 2000 years. Tom Barrack, a passionate polo player, is the owner of the Emerald Coast estate since four years ago and has founded the California Polo Club in Santa Barbara, CA the most exclusive club on the Pacific Ocean and a favourite venue of Prince Charles.
